DUSHANBE, Tajikistan - Energy-starved Tajikistan has banned the production of incandescent light bulbs in the country's latest effort to conserve power.

President Emomali Rakhmon's office said Tuesday the ban would complement similar restrictions on the import of incandescent light bulbs introduced earlier this year. Officials have said government offices began replacing incandescent bulbs with energy-saving bulbs in May.

The expense of buying costly long-life fluorescent or halogen lamps is likely to prove burdensome for much of the impoverished population.

Mountainous Tajikistan's vast hydropower potential has suffered from lack of investment since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the country has been forced to import electricity.
